Google Docs has a built-in word count feature. Here is how to find and use it on any device.
Open your document in Google Docs. Go to the menu and click Tools, then Word count. A box will appear showing the pages, words, characters, and characters excluding spaces. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+C (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+C (Mac) to open it quickly.
To count words in only part of your document, select the text you want, then open Tools > Word count. The box will show the count for your selection, with a note that it is a partial count.
In the Google Docs app, open your document and tap the three-dot menu in the top corner. Tap Word count to see the total. To count a selection, select the text first, then open the menu.
The built-in word count helps you meet essay and assignment requirements without leaving your document. It is especially handy when you are actively writing and need to check your progress.
